Grow Some Potatoes

Its easy to grow some potatoes and you don't need a garden to grow them.

Here is what you will need:

A large plantpot about 30cm (12 inches) in diameter

or container about the same size ( a bucket will do but you will need to put some holes in the bottom.)

A bag of multipurpose compost

2 Potatoes ( you really need seed potatoes but if these are not available, use ordinary potatoes from the kitchen)

An Egg Carton

What to do:

At the end of February, place the potatoes in the egg carton and put them on a light windowsill in a warm place - the kitchen is usually OK. They do not need any water or soil. Leave them here for about 6 weeks.

The potatoes will grow little tufts of leaves on them.

After 6 weeks they will be ready for planting.

Place some compost in the pot or container to a depth of about 5cm (2 inches) and then place the potatoes on the compost.

Be careful when handling the potatoes that you don't break the shoots off. Put some more compost over the top of the potatoes - just enough to cover the shoots.

Water the compost carefully and if the shoots are showing put a little more compost over them.

Check regularly and each time you see the shoots coming above the soil, cover them with a little more compost and if the compost is dry give them a little water.

Keep doing this until the pot is full of compost.

Now all you have to do is let the plants keep growing.

When you see flowers on the green stems, it means that it is nearly time to harvest your potatoes.

Leave the plants until the flowers die off and then tip all of the compost out of the pot.

In the compost you will find lots of baby potatoes ready for eating.
