Elecampane
(Inula
helenium)
A tall decorative
perennial that grows to 6ft (2m). It has large leaves and flowers
that can measure up to 4" (10cm) across. It will grow on any soil
in shade or full sun. Sow seeds in spring or propagate from root cuttings
in spring or autumn. As the plants tend to get very straggly, it is
best to renew the plants every 2-3 years. Lift roots in autumn.
Uses
The bitter
aromatic root is used to flavour liqueurs and confectionery.
