Wooden Hanging Basket

Materials Needed

18 Lengths of 2" x 1 1/2"timber - 15" long.

(Roofing lathes are ideal for this as they are treated with preservative)

4 Yds. Nylon string.

4 - 11/4" nails or screws.

Assembly Instructions

Take 16 of the lengths of timber and drill a hole, big enough to take the thickness of string, 11/2" from both ends of each piece. Ensure that the holes are central in the timber.

Lay 2 of the timber lengths on a flat surface and place the remaining 2 lengths that you have not drilled holes in, across them, about 6" apart. Ensure that they are parallel and square to the other 2 pieces and nail or screw into place. (See diagram A).

Cut the lengths of string into 4 equal pieces and tie a large knot in the end of each piece.

From the underneath of the frame that you have made, thread one piece of string through each hole. Working from alternate sides, tread the string through each piece of timber until all the sides are complete. (See Diagram B)

Once the sides are complete, gather the four strings together and tie them in a knot at the top. Ensure that they are all of equal length or the basket will hang lopsided. (See Diagram C)

If you wish, you can paint the basket using a fence preservative. There are many colours available from garden centres.

Line the basket with black polythene, an old compost sack is ideal for this, and punch a few holes in the bottom to provide drainage.

Fill with compost, plant up with your favourite plants and hang on a wall bracket. Don't forget to keep well watered.
