Gardeners Diary for the month of

Flowers & Plants

Take Lavender and Rose cuttings.
Plant spring bulbs such as Daffodils.
Prepare sites for planting new shrubs.
Plant up hanging baskets for winter and spring use. Use evergreens, winter flowering pansies and spring bulbs.
Cut back roses to prevent wind damage later and to reduce the possibility of black spot spores.
Dead head chrysanthemums to prolong flowering.
If your soil is suitable for heathers, now is the time to plant up a new bed.
Continue to divide herbaceous plants.
Move any shrubs that are crowded or in the wrong place.
Cut off flower spikes of gladioli as the flowers fade.
If bedding is past its best, pull it up and prepare the ground in readiness for the spring bedding.
Order shrubs to be planted in autumn.
Bed out Brompton Stocks that have been raised in the greenhouse.
If tuberous begonias are past their best, lift and lay on trays to dry.
Sow hardy annuals such as love in a mist, cornflowers and alyssum to give early displays next summer.
Bush roses that have finished flowering can now be cut back by a third to prevent them suffering wind rock.
Cut the flower spikes off Red Hot Pokers to stop them looking unsightly.
Protect Alpines by placing a sheet of glass or clear plastic over them to protect from excess moisture.
Lift Gladioli corm as they die back and place in storage to dry off for next year.
Sow Sweet Pea seeds for over-wintering in a sheltered border or in 3" pots in a cold frame.
