If frost threatens, move
Pelagoniums and Fuschias into the greenhouse.
Lift Gladioli bulbs and
dahlia tubers, leave to dry off and then place them into storage.
Tidy up alpine beds and
cover any plants that will not tolerate wetness.
If not already done,
sow hardy annual seeds as it is now getting too late.
Remove any summer bedding
that has finished and incorporate compost in preparation for spring bedding
and bulbs.
Collect and sow seeds
from border perennials such as poppies and aqualegia. Sow thinly onto compost
and thinly cover with fine gravel. Place in a coldframe until spring.
Trim summer flowering
heathers to keep them tidy.
Tidy up herbaceous borders,
removing canes etc.. Cut back stems close to the crown and lightly fork in
Bonemeal to boost growth next spring.
Move established shrubs
if needed.
Protect early chrysanthemum
blooms from frosts.
Plant Narcissi, tulips
and other spring flowering bulbs.
Transplant wallflowers,
bellis, Canterbury bells, myosotis, Sweet Williams and other biennials for
spring colour.
Plant Lily bulbs as soon
as they become available.
Plant out
Wallflowers, Polyanthus, Forget-Me-Nots, Sweet Williams and Foxgloves to
get a good start before the onset of winter.
Lift and divide large
clumps of lillies or plant new bulbs ready for next summer.
Plant new shrubs.
Trim back lavender after
flowering to keep it tidy but leave the main pruning until spring.
Cut out the stems of
herbaceous plants
Finish
planting any spring bedding plants.
Lift Dahlia
tubers and place in boxes of compost in the greenhouse.
Plant hardy
heathers (only in lime free soil).
Remove any leaves that
may be falling.
Trim roses to remove
seed heads, any infected leaves and to reduce wind damage.
Plant up containers with
evergreens and winter flowering pants.
Begin to clean up the
herbaceous border. Trim back the tops of plants and remove all canes and supports.
Finish planting all spring
bulbs.
Trim rambler roses to
encourage good growth and flowering next year.
Trim back Buddleia and
lavertera to prevent wind damage and thin out other shrubs by cutting out
woody stems to allow new shoots to form next year.
Remove dead leaves from
hostas and divide the plant if needed.
As plants are cleared
from the garden, dig the area over and incorporate some compost to rejuvenate
the soil.
Cut the stems down on
perennial plants and divide the plants if needed.
