Prune Buddleia and
Hydrangea and other late flowering shrubs to promote new growth.
Prune dogwoods to
just above ground level. This will ensure plenty of new shoots that will
have better colour than older wood.
If Snowdrops have
finished flowering, lift and divide them.
Plant herbaceous
perennials.
Bed out Brompton
Stocks if they have been over wintered in a cold frame.
Plant corms of Cyclamen
in shady spots.
Remove old heads
from hydrangeas. On older plants (over 3 years old) prune by cutting out
dead shoots and about one third of the older branches.
If soil conditions
are right (dry on top-moist underneath) sow seeds of Hardy Annuals where
they are to flower.
Thin out new shoots
of herbaceous plants if needed.
Heel in any indoor
bulbs that have finished flowering for establishing outdoors.
Cut back Late flowering
Clematis.
Buy new alpines and
plant them out.
Divide bearded iris
if needed.
Divide snowdrops.
Cut back the twiggy
stems on fuchsias.
Prune roses.
Trim back lavender
to give strong new growth.
Prune, spray and
feed Hybrid Tea Roses.
Plant Gladioli corms.
(If only a few at a time are planted over a few weeks, it will spread
the flowering period).
Trim Mediterranean
type plants such as Santolinas, Rosemary, lavender, cistus and coronilla
to keep them neat and tidy and help them to last longer.
Finish any planting
of hedges or shrubs before they start into growth.
Protect the tender
new shoots of delphiniums from slug damage. Thin out if there are a lot
of new shoots, any that are removed can be potted up as cuttings.
Take cuttings of
clematis and honeysuckle by layering long shoots.
Sow Pansies and Violas
in their flowering positions.
If the weather is
mild sow Sweet Peas in their flowering positions.
Plant a fragrant
lawn using chamomile or thyme.
Keep an eye on tulips
for signs of aphids or diseases such as tulip fire. Spray if needed.
Lift, divide and
replant any overcrowded border plants.
Cut back dogwoods
and willows to ground level to give new growth. Mulch when done.
Feed roses with a
proprietary rose fertiliser and then mulch around the plants to conserve
moisture.
