Gardeners Diary for the month of
DECEMBER
Flowers & Plants
Remember that snow can damage plants and should be shaken off.- Tidy up Roses that have had their blooms killed by frost.
- Take root cuttings of herbaceous plants such as phlox and oriental poppies and verbascum.
- Protect slow growing and dwarf conifers and evergreens from wind and snow damage. This can be in the form of a simple windbreak, a chickenwire frame filed with straw placed over the plants or tying fleece over the them.
- Tie in the stems of climbing roses to prevent them being damaged by wind. Check all new plantings to see if their roots have been loosened in the wind. Firm if required.
